Ely and Jean Depew are two of our earliest members of Blacklake
Gyro. While not exactly “charter” members, they did
join in 1993, the first year of our club’s organization.
“Si” is short for Silas, and comes from his English
ancestry. Si Ely is originally from Cisco, Texas. In case you didn’t know it, Cisco is located somewhere between Fort Worth and Abilene. You must have heard of the “Cisco Kid”. Well, he was named after Cisco, Texas. |

moved to California after completing high school in Cisco. He
attended Cal Tech while at the same time working as an aircraft
assembler. He enrolled in the Navy V12 Program and was sent to

– 1945. Upon Leaving the Navy, he finished his college education at UCLA, earning a BS degree in political science and real estate. Si is a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. After graduating, he went to work for the Los Angeles County Assessor, spending 30 years in that office. In the mid-1970’s he started his own appraisal company. The Elys raised their family in the San Fernando Valley, having resided there for 35 years. Si has three sons, all of whom attended and graduated from Cal-State Northridge. Two of the sons followed in Si’s footsteps and are currently pursuing careers as real estate appraisers, one in Seattle and the other in Los Angeles. The other son is in the computer consulting business, and it’s probably his good influence that got Si into Macintosh computer systems. Si has five grandchildrenSi and his wife separated in 1984. Later that same year, he met Jean Depew, who had been widowed in 1982. Jean is a native Californian, born and raised in Los Angeles. She attended Washington High School (same as Roger Lindley), and then El Camino Junior College and the University of Southern California. She is a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Jean has two sons: one is a pilot, and the other is in the moving business (aka truck driver). While they were living in the San Fernando Valley, Si and Jean had been dating “off and on” for about 5 to 6 years. In the summer of 1990 they came to Blacklake and bought what is now their home in Crown Pointe. They both immediately became involved in Village activities. Although not now playing golf for physical reasons, Si headed up the Friday Couples Golf for 4 – 5 years. Meanwhile Jean was Secretary for the Women’s Golf group. Si became a Board member of the Blacklake Homeowners Association in 1995, and was President in 1999. He also headed up the Architecture Control Board. Jean also served on the Homeowner Association Board, as Recording Secretary for 4 years. Si and Jean joined Blacklake Gyro in 1993. Si served as Secretary and Historian. He was also Editor of the Blacklake GYRO SCOOP which twice received the Gyro International Award for Best Newsletter under his editorship. Both are members of Nipomo Newcomers, and active in the “Pot-Luck Dinner” Group. Jean is just starting to get involved with the Crafts Group. Si is co-author of the book. “Basic Real Estate Appraisal”, which is in its 6th edition. |
