| The
SCOOP Editorial Staff decided this month to honor our Club President
and District IX Governor as a “surprise” featured
profile. And of course, we all know what makes a good man even
better – his better half, aka his wife. I really thought that it would be easy to write this article about the Lindleys because we are friends. success. But to sit down and objectively review their lives and accomplishments is difficult. So as I was taught a long time ago - - “just the facts, ma’am, just the facts.” As an undergraduate student at UCLA, Roger had joined the Army Reserve and had been stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. Upon returning to campus, he was in charge of the Audio-Visual Program, where he had under-grads working for him. The incentive for them was the biggest ‘perk’ on campus – as a volunteer you were allotted a parking space on campus!!! This was in 1968 when they had met, and Roger persuaded Carol to transfer from Northside to UCLA where they volunteered for this program. Actually, they were together until they married in 1982 when they drove to Las Vegas to stand up for their friends who were getting married. So they decided to get married as well. Aha, Las Vegas works its magic again. |

| During
their time together, they owned two bars, The Hatch Cover on Wilshire
Blvd. In Santa Monica and the Schooner, in the San Fernando
Valley. They gave this up when they discovered that they were
meeting themselves coming and going – owning your own bar
business is a 24-hour job, forget everything else – school,
family, holidays, etc. (Guess this experience is what makes Roger the
great bartender he is at our Gyro affairs.) Both eventually went into real estate, a smart move in the West Los Angeles/Palisades area. Carol was a realtor and Roger an appraiser. Carol also had an accounting business, and to this day she still has several active accounts. So forget seeing much of Carol from January through April 15; she’s busy working on client income tax returns. Also, throughout the year she is required to attend training sessions to keep her license current. The Lindleys had bought a home in Crown Pointe as an investment, and when they retired, they moved into it. Prior to settling in at Blacklake, they toured the USA in their motor home, and for a year toured Europe. It was a wonderful experience for both and they made many friends with whom they are still in contact. Since settling in at Blacklake, they became active participants in the various activities available. Carol at present is a member of the Blakelake Management Council. She also has held offices in the Crown Pointe Homeowners Association and help organize the Nipomo chapter of Newcomers. She has held various offices in the Dana-Carillo Adobe and if that’s not enough, she attends meetings on a near-daily basis with other groups. Then there is, of course, bridge. Golf as a #1 priority is slipping away. She still plays now and then if the weather is pleasant, and the tee-time not too early. Roger, although retired, has a new job at Blacklake. This entails going out on the golf course 5 times a week (2 days off) in an attempt to conquer it. As all golfers know, there is the exhilaration of victory and the agony of defeat. But he persists and has actually improved and lowered his handicap. – plus loving every minute of it. Next to golf there is bridge, which he enjoys almost as much as golf. This may sound as though all Roger does is play, but in reality he is as active in community affairs as Carol. He has served as President of the Crown Pointe Homeowners Association, and he has assumed the position of arranging the monthly golf tournaments (formerly known as Fairways Golf, now called the Monthly Mixer). Roger is always ready, willing, and able to assume more and more responsibility when the need arises. He is always there when needed. The magic words are, “Roger, would you - - - ?” And it is done! We all know that the Blue & Gold of UCLA runs through his blood. (I really believe he bleeds blue and gold blood when UCLA loses.) Being such an avid Bruins fan is only part of his love of sports. Ask him any sports trivia question, i.e. “What was the name of Stanford’s coach in 1940, and what was the score of the UCLA vs. Cal game in 1953?” and BOOM, you’ll get an answer. And the correct one at that. Although so well versed on sports, his intellect runs through current events, social problems, etc. Not only did he step up to the plate when Blacklake Gyro needed someone to fill the office of President, but he volunteered despite the fact that he would be serving concurrently as District IX Governor. He is qualified since he has held almost every office at the Club level. And, as we know, he is doing a great job at both. Carol and Roger are both willing to step forward and assume responsibility when requested. Quietly they appear, Carol, with her tasty soup or casserole in hand, and Roger, with his experience and energy and his usual efficiency, smoothing out whatever the problem. They ask nothing in return, and they give so much of themselves. Indeed, they exemplify the true spirit of Gyro. We are truly the luckiest people to have the Lindleys as our friends and fellow Gyros. |
